*Citronellol and geraniol are natural components of rose petal hydrolate. Relevant for people with allergies.
Hydrolates are obtained from flowers and plant parts. They combine the concentrated power of the plants and, in addition to the fragrance, have various positive and negative effects. People with intolerance to certain plants often also react to the corresponding hydrosols. A single hydrolat consists of up to 200 chemical components - some of which can have an allergenic effect. For this reason, 26 allergenic components have been defined by the EU. These must always be shown separately in the overview of ingredients (INCI) and let people with allergies know that certain products should be avoided.
Face serum: The ingredients in detail
1. Rose Petal Hydrolate
Quality: organic
The active ingredients of the Damask rose blossoms are obtained from the steam distillation of organically grown roses. The flowers are picked early in the morning as this is the time when the oil content of the flowers is at its highest.
Rose blossom hydrosol is known for its calming and harmonizing effect and is therefore the main ingredient in our facial serum.
2. Ferment – Vegan (!) lactic acid bacteria
Lactic acid bacteria preserve the serum and at the same time bring about a significant improvement in skin moisture. The active ingredient in our moisturizing serum is produced by fermentation, as we know it from the production of sauerkraut or kimchi.
Although the word milk is in the name, the lactic acid bacteria in the face serum have nothing to do with milk.
Many serums from natural cosmetics are preserved with alcohol. We were keen to avoid this as alcohol fluidises the skin barrier, leading to increased moisture loss. Of course, with the FIVE facial serum we want to achieve exactly the opposite: namely to store water in and on the skin. Thanks to the innovative active ingredient, we have succeeded.
3. Glycerin
Quality: organic, made from coconut oil
Glycerine acts within the entire top layer of skin (epidermis) and binds water there. As a result, glycerin increases skin moisture, promotes skin elasticity and protects the skin barrier.
Glycerin is one of the most powerful hydrating ingredients and is essential for a moisturizing serum. Like hyaluronic acid, it is a hygroscopic ingredient, but due to its tiny molecular size, it is better able to reach the deep layers of the skin and unfold its effect there. A frequently underestimated ingredient!
Glycerin is often criticized for being drying. This statement is only valid when used in extremely high concentrations, which is rarely if ever used in skin care. Then the glycerin would release the water bound from the skin into the air instead of keeping it in the skin. At lower concentrations - we use 4 percent in our face serum - this is not the case.
4. Vegetable hyaluronic acid
Quality: non GMO, from grain
Hyaluronic acid effectively binds moisture to your skin and ensures resilience and elasticity. This demonstrably improves skin moisture levels. Hyaluronic acid also protects and regenerates the skin barrier.
We use high-molecular hyaluronic acid in our facial serum out of conviction. If you have already dealt with hyaluronic acid, this may surprise you, since in cosmetics, low-molecular hyaluronic acid in particular is considered the holy grail, since it not only acts on the skin, but can also pass through the skin barrier. This is undisputed, but various studies show that low-molecular hyaluronic acid has a pro-inflammatory effect and is associated with scarring. In addition, the ability to bind water decreases as the size of the molecule decreases.
Reason enough for us to rely exclusively on high-molecular hyaluronic acid (1-1.4 Mda), which binds water, promotes healing and has a regenerating effect. You can find out more about this in our article on the various hyaluronic acids .
5. L-arginine
At four percent, L-arginine is a natural component of the skin's own moisture retention system. This system is called the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). L-arginine helps the skin retain water by preventing premature evaporation.
